Field Trip to Philips Research

On April 18th, together with Philips Research North America, EMBS organized a field trip to Philips Research at Briarcliff Manor, NY. Researchers at Philips introduced several on-going research projects in biomedical engineering and healthcare in Philips.

Seminar: Claros Diagnostics: A Case Study in BME Entrepreneurship

On March 28th, 2008, EMBS held a seminar regarding BME Entrepreneurship at the BME lounge in Mudd building. Prof. Sam Sia was invited to talk about his company and about entrepreneurship in BME.

 In his talk, he described how academic work in biomedical engineering led to the spinoff of a startup company, Claros Diagnostics, now based in Woburn MA.  He also discussed how the incentives of startup companies can be aligned to serve the goals of international development and global health.

The First General Meeting

The first general meeting was held on 2-3 pm, Feb. 8th, 2008.

The faculty advisor, Prof. Andrew Laine, introduced the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology society to the general audience.

Then the president, Qi Duan, introduced the planned activies in general. The Treasurer, Srinivas Chivukula, explained the details for the BME business plan competition and the online magazine.

Finally, group photos was taken.

8th Annual Summer School in Biomedical Imaging in Berder, France

Every two years, an EMBS-sponsored summer school on biomedical imaging is held in gorgeous Brittany, France. The school objective is to contribute without any exclusion to advances in a rapidly evolving field, and to foster participation in the adventure of research. It provides up-to-date, state-of-art knowledge on emerging areas and addresses important issues dealing with complex, multivariate systems, going from basic to applied research. The summer school is open to graduate students (Masters and PhD), post doctoral scientists, radiologists, biologists, researchers and engineers in industry and the composition is typically very international. For more information, visit their website.
